Cybersecurity Tip: Out-of-Band Verification

Out-of-band verification is the practice of using already verified methods of communication to identify someone.

Scammers continue to refine their techniques to make their texts, emails, and phone calls look as real as possible. Considering the increasing number of day-to-day scams, it can be daunting to look for ways to keep yourself safe.

One simple approach to greatly reduce your risk of fraud is using Out-of-Band Verification.

Out-of-band verification is the practice of using already verified methods of communication such as known phone numbers, previously verified email chains, or company websites to verify any requests you receive.

Though it is easy for a fraudster to send out messages impersonating someone else, it is significantly more difficult for them to intercept legitimate lines of communication. No matter how good their disguise may be, if you get an unexpected call asking for sensitive information, hang up and call back using a number you know is real. This simple approach can help you stop a potential scam in its tracks.
