Cybersecurity Tip: Updates & Patches
|
---|
To gain access to your systems, cybercriminals scan for programs and devices exposed to the Internet and attempt to identify any unpatched or out-of-date software that they can exploit. Any device can potentially be a vulnerability – laptops, programs, printers, Wi-Fi routers, mobile phones, etc.
Keeping your software, systems, and devices up-to-date is the simplest and most effective practice to mitigate risks tied to outdated and vulnerable software.
Updates may be released to enhance system capabilities, modernize the look and feel of a product, or to preemptively shore up system security. Additional patches address specific vulnerabilities and are typically released as soon as possible upon discovery of an exploitation. When offered, you should make sure that patches are applied immediately to prevent compromise, data loss, financial loss, and denials of service.
